Cory Walsh: Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Registered Marriage Family Therapist Intern, NCC (He/Him/His)

What you will get if you choose Cory as a counselor:

  1. You will receive the support of someone trained to aid those dealing with life stresses, low points in life, negative past events, as well as doing relationship and family work. Also, if it interests you, Cory is able to utilize a form of therapy for trauma called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy. (To learn more about how EMDR can help, visit our EMDR Page here.)

  2. You will receive quality care from a professional who has kept up with industry standards and is constantly learning, to ensure you get the best possible therapy at the end of the day. Cory received his graduate education at Rollins College and is Nationally Certified Counselor.

  3. If you are looking to work with a “real person”, Cory will meet you where you are at. Therapy does not always have to be a place of seriousness. You will be encouraged to be your true self, unapologetically. Bad humor (usually in the form of puns or dad jokes), geeking out over the latest Marvel show/movie, discussing the latest video game releases, can be common place in your sessions. We want to hear about your hobbies and pastimes that make you happy and give you the motivation to keep moving forward.

  4. Lastly, you will receive the time of someone that truly loves to help other people. Cory’s passions have always been to help other people heal and grow. Some things you may have gone through might be uncomfortable to talk about, but Cory will take every step possible to support you through your journey.

Reasons why Cory may not be the best fit for you:

While it is super important that I list the reasons why we may mesh well together, I believe it is equally important to be honest about reasons why I might not be the best counselor for you. It’s best to consider this the “real talk” section of my About Me.

  1. If you don’t want therapy, I’m probably not a great fit for you. Silly as it sounds, I mean this. I believe in using your time intentionally, because you are making a big commitment to spending your money on getting my support. Some people are not ready for therapy at this moment in their life, and that is okay.

  2. If you don’t like directness, my approach may not be best for you. Firstly, the stances I take are not aggressive or demeaning, you’ll never catch me yelling at you or putting you down. However, I will ask for permission to use appropriate confrontation and call you out. If I notice you are stuck in a rut, I will bring attention to what is working and what isn’t working. I believe I would be doing you a disservice if I let things slide and watched you remain stuck.

  3. I may not be properly equipped to handle all concerns you may be experiencing. For preface, if I list a concern you have, this does not mean you are “too broken to be helped”, it simply means I’m not the best fit for you. With that being said, I will do what is my power to connect you with a counselor or professional that can better assist you. Listed below are some concerns where I may refer you to another provider.

    1. If you are actively suicidal and/or homicidal. Reclamation and Recovery Counseling is not a crisis response center, and we are not equipped to provide emergency services to keep you safe at all times. If you or a loved one is contemplating suicide or homicide, we urge you to immediately call 911 for support at this moment.

    2. If your primary concern is a symptom dealing with psychosis or eating disorders, I am more than likely not the best choice for you. These concerns do not make you bad, but typically require the collaboration of an entire treatment team, including a psychiatrist and case manager. We will be happy to direct you to programs that can best assist you if that is the support you need.

  4. I may not be trained enough to provide therapy for you. I’ll be honest, some populations I just don’t do well with. If you are under the age of 16’ I’m probably not for you. I typically work with young adults and older, as my approaches work best with those folks. I’ll happily put you in contact with counselors who do work with adolescents or children if that is what you need.
