What can I expect to happen in a family session?
These meetings will be held between yourself, all invited family members and your counselor. All activities will be geared towards the healing of the family unit. This approach is a tad different than the traditional session between just you and a counselor. Counselors in Family Therapy tend to take a more “Neutral” and mediating stance in these sessions. This is done to ensure equality and fairness to all members involved in the session. These sessions may also be more hands on and directive, as the counselor aids you and your family in creating a healthier dynamic. Depending on the concerns that are bringing you into counseling, typical items that are covered in relationship sessions include: learning communication skills, providing education about relationship dynamics, teaching and practicing empathy for family members, and joint goal planning.
